The Sun
Firstly, it was symbolized with animal figures such as birds of prey especially eagle, horses since they can go across steps fast and easily, cocks since they crow in order to awake people in dawn and rabbits since they can run fast in order not to be hunted. That is to say, nomadic people admire these animals since they have endless energy like the sun has.
Nomadic people who feel powerful only when they are on horseback always wish they had the energy and power of the animals. They, later, converted these animal figures into geometrical ones called “ideograms”.
Mythological Animals
The winged mythological animal having the body of the lion and the head of the bird of prey is seen in the border surrounding the centre and the outer border of the carpet, which reflects the Persian style during the Dynasty of Ahamenid. However, this design originally belongs to İskit art. The same design are seen in Asia Huns’ art as well, which means it is older then expected.
Horse
Horse has been one of the characteristics of Turks for 4000 years.
Following the motifs of deer and water-lily which symbolizes the resurrection and immortality in mythology, a flock of 28 horses are seen in the widest border. The horses, whose manes are cut and tails are tied, can be seen on this carpet.
To cut the manes of the horses in order to make the ride easier is a Central Anatolian tradition. The horse figures found in Pazırık carpets are mount horses.
